Essential Mixer Terminology
As you came across mixer, whether you want to rent or purchase one, you will inevitably encounter a few unfamiliar terms. Below are some of the basic terms that you should take note of when renting an audio mixer.
Channels
A channel is a signal path that enables you to hook up your equipment such as your microphone, amplifier, preamps and signal processors to your audio mixer. Usually, each channel comes together with an equalizer, auxiliary sends, and pan control. However, some mixers simply provide rudimentary channels and a master output.
Buses
Buses can be deemed as the intersections where several channels meet. Each mixer channel routes its signal to either a bus or a group of buses. The main output of the mixer is connected to the master mix bus that is fed by the channel faders.
Groups
Grouping is a useful way to manage a large number of channels. It allows you to control and process several channels collectively. For instance, you can group the microphones of the drums together to allow easier control of the overall sound of the drums.
Cue System
Cue System allows you to listen to selected channels without affecting the mixer’s output. The signal is usually fed to a headphone amplifier or monitor speakers. Cue systems allow to the signal either before or after the fader has affected it.
Types of Mixer
Analog versus Digital Mixer
Analog mixers remain popular today mainly due to its lower cost and ease of use. The presence of physical knobs, faders and switches allow them to be controlled more intuitively than digital soundboards. The drawbacks would be it requires a larger footprint that is undesirably inconvenient on a cramped stage or a crowded area.
Digital mixers have an amazing array of effects possibilities. With the touch of a button, you can trigger preprogrammed routing and effects.
One huge advantage of such mixers is that it can save and recall mixes. USB flash drives can be used to store settings from past performances that can be big time savers for sound checks. Some digital mixers even allow you to pre-program mixes using your laptop computer.
The potential downside that accompanies the enormous flexibility of digital mixers is that it will take quite a considerable amount of time to master all the possibilities of the mixer. Learning all the functions is not essential, though. Saving the settings and configuring the interface according to your needs can help reduce the complexity.
