Amplifier Rental Malaysia

Turning the good stuff UP

Renting or buying an amplifier is not as easy as it appears to be. There are many different types of amplifiers in the market. However, that being said it is prudent to bring your instrument along when testing the amplifier. . Essentially, there are four types of amplifiers; solid state, tube, modeling, and hybrids.

Types of Amplifier

Solid State Amplifiers uses transistors for their preamp and power sections. They are both reliable and seldom require repairs. The tone is clean and rarely has distortions. This type of amplifier is popular for players looking for a sturdy and reliable touring amp.

Tube amplifiers produce warm, fat tone with organic distortion. They are louder than solid tube amps of the same wattage. The tube performances can deteriorate over time hence occasional changing is required.

Modeling amps, also known as digital amps, use digital processors to simulate the sound of old-fashioned tube technology. This type of amps is programmable and usually has built-in digital effects such as delay and chorus. Some include direct interface with a recording machine or PA system.

Hybrid amps use an actual tube in conjunction with the solid state power section of the amps. Most of the hybrid amps use a tube in the preamp section and solid state circuitry in the power section to create a tube without using power tubes.

How to Choose an Amplifier

Distortion

Distortion is generated from three sources; power amps, preamps, and the speakers. Many players tend to overlook power amp distortion when trying an amp. This can be done by turning the volume way up. The produced sound should be lively with a certain degree of crisp attack.

Power Requirement

Choose an amp that fits your primary application. At least 30 watts is needed if you are playing in a rock band. 100-watt will be overkill if you are living in an apartment opting for home recording. As a rule of thumb, if you are playing out often, you can try to opt for a minimum 15-watt of tube tone.

Solid State, Tube or Digital

These days, solid-state and digital amps offer excellent tone for a cheaper price as well as with fewer maintenance headaches. However, tube tones are still regarded the benchmark by many top players. Nevertheless, when testing amplifiers, take a blind listening test and let your ears judge on their own.
