Choosing a microphone can be confusing when you do not know where and how to begin with. Blindly purchasing a microphone without knowing how to relate the specs to the desired function can have dire consequences.
Purpose
Before buying, define the purpose of the microphone. Is it for the purpose of voice recording, speech or sound instrumental recording? If possible, try to be specific as much as possible regarding its usage. Will you be carrying the microphone around to events or will you be doing studio recording in your house. The point is that the microphone usage varies from people to people and different microphones cater for different needs.
Frequency Response
The frequency response of a microphone refers to its range of frequencies that it can detect. A range of 80Hz to 15 kHz would make a good choice for vocal usage. Instrumental sound recording for bass instruments, however, will require a lower frequency range as low as 30Hz.
SPL-Handling Capability
SPL (sound pressure level) is expressed in decibels (dB). It describes the maximum volume that a microphone is capable in handling. This factor should be taken into consideration when dealing with loud instruments such as drums.
Dynamic vs. Condenser
There are two kinds of microphones; transducer type and dynamic type. Dynamic types are usually rugged and have high SPL-handling capability. In fact, most have internal shock mounting used for shock and vibration isolation thus making it easier to carry around on stage. On the other hand, condenser microphones have a greater appeal as they have good sensitivity at all frequencies. How, that does not necessarily make it a practical choice. Condenser types are often used for studio recording as it can detect natural sounds more effectively than dynamic types. Being more sensitive, transducer microphones are often jointly used with a shield to eliminate breathing noise.
USB Microphones
With the trending computer-based recording, the way music is recorded indeed changed to adapt to the trend. USB powered microphones now come in both dynamic and transducer type, connecting seamlessly to personal computer and Android devices. With a healthy range of USB compatible microphones types to choose from, tablet and smartphones can be used as a highly portable recording studio.
