A microphone stand, short for mic stand; usually ends up at the bottom of the list when it comes to purchasing or renting home studio equipment. Its importance should not be underestimated. Without a mic stand, your microphone will inevitably pick up unwanted knocks, bump and vibrations that will ruin a take, consuming a lot of time and energy in the process.
A good tip when buying or renting a microphone stand is to buy or rent at least two for your first two microphones. This will influence significantly your recordings quality and avoid problems that you would otherwise face.
Mic Boom
A straight microphone stand is not very flexible and can be a potentially hindrance especially for those who are singing and playing their musical instruments at the same time. Your best choice would be to choose the one with a boom arm attached, also commonly known as a boom stand.
The boom as aforementioned will provide a greater range of movement. A mic clip, fixed on the boom arm can thus be conveniently positioned at various heights and angles within its limitation. This will ensure that no part of the device will come into contact with the instrument that you will be using for recording.
The Base
The base would usually stand on a tripod, providing it with stability. Do check that the tripod has rubber feet on each leg. The rubbers help to absorb vibrations coming from the floor which will otherwise be picked up by the microphones.
Shock Mount
Some microphone models especially condenser microphones are placed on a shock mount instead of a mic clip to reduce low-frequency thumps and vibrations from the floor.
Pop Shield
A pop shield, also commonly known as pop filter is placed in between the vocalist and the microphone to reduce the “popping sound” generated from the word ‘p’ and ‘b’. The output will be cleaner and smoother.
A good microphone stand is an absolute piece of gear for either concerts or home studio. If your budget allows it, do pick up a pop filter too.
