Wireless Microphones

The wireless microphone, being untethered allows a greater freedom for the speaker to move about the stage. Wireless microphones are electronically similar to wired microphones. The main difference is that a wireless microphone includes a transmitter that transmits signals to a receiver unit that is connected to a mixer or a PA system. The most common wireless systems used to transmit the radio frequencies are digital, UHF and VHF.

A wireless microphone system that delivers acceptable quality of sound typically uses the UHF band, which has a wider range of frequency selection than VHF. The best systems use digital technology as it eliminates noise and signal dropouts (A dropout is a momentary loss of signal in a communications system, usually caused by noise, propagation anomalies, or system malfunctions) that can be an issue with low-quality sound systems.

Diversity

Better quality wireless microphones usually have diversity technology embedded in it. Receivers with true diversity have two separate radio modules which the selection of signals of finest quality or cleanest after comparing the two similar signals. This is crucial in avoiding interference generated by devices such as radio and handphones.

Of course, the diversity factor only applies when the microphones are used in a crowded location with structures that can block the signals. In open location, however, using a true-diversity receiver is not a necessity.

Matching Frequencies

Often took for granted, it is imperative to check that the receiver and the microphone are of the same operating bandwidth especially when you are buying the microphone and receivers separately. This criterion is negligible when you are purchasing a full system.

Frequency Flexibility and Automatic Frequency Selection

Frequency agility allows one to have the choice of several frequency paths to select from. By doing this, the signals transmitted are free from interference from competing signals from other wireless devices. Hence, multiple wireless systems are easier to be coordinated and use simultaneously when a selection choices of frequencies are available.

Multi-stage music festivals, for instance, can be a very challenging task, posing a risk of technical errors and difficulties. This is where automatic frequency selection systems come into the picture. This system eliminates the need to manually resetting the system; this feature will select the frequency automatically.
