Impedance
Impedance is basically resistance to the electrical signals that you are sending to the speakers and is measured using Ohm. Most speakers have an impedance rating of 8 ohms. If you were to connect two speakers in parallel, be sure to calculate first the total impedance. For instance, if two 8 ohms speakers were to be connected in parallel the resultant impedance would be 4 ohms. Low impedance (2 or 3 ohms) puts a great load on the amplifier. Hence, be careful when driving speakers at low impedance.
Sound Pressure Level (SPL)
Sound pressure level is among the few specs that you need to take note of, especially the peak value. The peak (max) value is the maximum output level for the speaker. By knowing this spec, you will be able to compare apple to apple to know the maximum loudness that it can reach.
Types and Sizes
Speakers can also be chosen based on shapes and sizes. In general, there are four types; subwoofers, floor-standing, bookshelf and in wall speakers.
Subwoofers are relatively heavier than bookshelf speakers and are usually placed on the floor due to their size and weight. Subwoofers emit low frequency and are often used for producing base sounds.
Floor- standing speakers are capable of handling the full range of frequencies. Its low frequencies sounds are comparable to subwoofers.
Bookshelf speakers are aptly named after the space that they take up, which is relatively small. If you are just opting to listen to music for hours merely to overcome boredom during revision etc. and able to tolerate a slightly lower quality, this type of speaker can serve you adequately.
For in-wall speakers, they are designed for the mid-range and high-end frequencies. Their primary purpose lean more towards aesthetic quality rather than acoustics. It pairs well with home theatre surround system. The installation location of in-wall speakers is crucial to optimize its performance. Good in-walls are typically more expensive compared to its peers – bookshelf speakers or floor standing speakers.
